Joe, Darren and I all had a mad session from the Golf Course Car Park,
Borth today. First of all I couldn't get through the gate again as the
padlock was jammed shut so we ended up cutting the chain (again). Joe and
Darren had already checked the conditions on the sea front and were
originally going to rig 5.7m sails, but we all decided to rig 5m sails and
wave boards in the end. I was first out on the water and had a really good
first run, overpowered, but jumping nicely off the steep, clean waves. Joe
then came out and we both struggled through the shorebreak. I managed to
get out the back but Joe didn't so he went back in and got his bigger (94
litre) board. After a couple of runs I also went back to my van and got my
bigger (85 litre) Hifly out.
The cross-offshore (SSE) wind was very gusty and there just wasn't
quite enough wind on the inside as the tide was high so the wind was
disrupted by the dunes. Joe then went out on his bigger board, but I stayed
on my little wave board. We both struggled out and managed to get out the
back where we stayed for a while. Darren eventually got on the water He
came out on his bigger board after seeing us change up, but couldn't get
out the back. After half an hour or so of getting trashed by the waves he
dragged his kit up the beach, threw it on the sand and then walked back to
us swearing and shouting about the conditions!. He soon cheered up though
and all three of us went out again.
Darren got out the back this
time and then decided to stay out there for ages, despite the fact that he
must have been just as overpowered as Joe and I were. After the flukey,
gusty winds on the inside, things just went mad beyond the white water
where a 4.0m sail would have been plenty and some of the gusts were just
plain ridiculous. Survival was the order of the day out there and although
I made some good gybes and nice little jumps no one was really going for
anything and bearing away on the way out was just scary! I saw Joe perform
a pretty spectacular catapult at one point, and I was glad I had my full
face mask helmet on as I managed to smash the face mask against my boom
hard enough to mark my boom (and break my nose had I not had the helmet
on). I also had a couple of really good wave rides, but again, bearing away
on the face of the fairly big waves in such mad conditions was pretty
scary.
I packed up and left for work at around 2.30pm and left Darren and Joe to
it. It looked as though the wind swung more cross-shore (southerly) and
would have cleaned up a little as the tide dropped, so hopefully the
conditions improved and became a little more enjoyable for them.
I was tempted to get back in at the Lifeboat Station as there was some
perfect, clean 2-3 foot surf rolling in there, but the thought of the cold
wet wetsuit discouraged me.
